Do It Yourself

The Tangent Portfolios overweight segments of the stock market that historically have delivered superior risk-adjusted returns: value stocks, small company stock, and low beta stocks. To learn more, please read The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing, by Ben Stein and Phil DeMuth.

The automatic investment option provided by WealthFront is no longer available. If you want to invest in these portfolios, you will have to do it yourself.

The following calculator will look up recent prices of the underlying securities and estimate how many shares you would buy of each one, depending on which of the portfolios you want to own and how much money you want to invest in this strategy overall. This is provided for your convenience only: please do your own due diligence and make your own calculations before buying any investment securities

This calculator can also serve as a guide to buying, selling, and rebalancing your Tangent Portfolio, as explained in the book.

Drawdowns in Retirement

The calculator below represents our best guess of how much money a retiree might be able to safely withdraw from a self-managed Tangent Portfolio each year, based on Monte Carlo simulations. While these are educated guesses, no one knows for sure how much is truly safe to take out, since no one knows the future.

Enter the value of your portfolio and your age (or the age of the youngest person if you are in a couple) to see your estimated safe withdrawal amount. Again, these withdrawal rates would have no applicability to other types of investment portfolios.
